Iowa Unitarian Association records, 1869-1969.

This collection consists of programs; articles of incorporation and by-laws; conference minutes; board of trustees records; Sunday school reports; correspondence; treasurer's books; correspondence, bulletins and reports from various local churches and fellowships; and general and local histories of Unitarian churches in Iowa. The collection also includes materials from the Western Illinois and Iowa Conference of Unitarian and other Christian Churches, the Mississipi Valley Federation of Liberal Religious Youth, the Prairie States Unitarian Universalist Association, the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Western Unitarian Conference, and the Missouri Valley Federation of Liberal Religious Youth. The collection includes biographical sketches of Arthur Markley Judy and Mary Augusta Safford and a list of women in the Unitarian ministry. Correspondence, bulletins, reports, histories, etc. from the following churches and fellowships comprise a portion of the collection: Brookings and Vermillion S.D.; Ames, Burlington, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Davenport, Des Moines, Grinnell, Humboldt, Hutchinson, Iowa City, Marshalltown, Mason City, Mitchellville, Mount Pleasant, Ottumwa, Perry, Rock Rapids, Sioux City, and Waterloo, Iowa; Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri; Lawrence, Topeka and Manhattan, Kansas; Lincoln, Omaha, Scattsbluff and North Platte, Nebraska.

Paul Nathaniel Carnes (1921-1979) earned an AB from Indiana University in 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, and on Christmas Day, 1942, he was captured by German forces in North Africa and spent the duration of the war as a German P.O.W. Following World War II, he enrolled in Harvard Divinity School, where he earned an STB in 1948.
